Hytale animal farming guide
Animal farming turns hunting into a renewable food supply: pen the animals, feed them, and collect instead of chase. The mechanics of feeding and husbandry live in the current Early Access build — verify specifics in-game — but the setup logic below is stable.
Why pen animals at all
Three reasons, in order of how soon you'll care:
- Food security. A pen of animals beats a two-minute walk to the nearest spawn of prey every time you're hungry.
- Renewable resources. Farmed animals produce over time — hunting only subtracts.
- Safety. Animals near your base don't need to be defended in the wild at night.
Building the pen
- Fence height matters more than pen size. A tall-enough fence on a small pen beats a sprawling pen animals escape from.
- Build near your base but outside your walls. You'll be in and out constantly; a gate beats a hole in your defenses.
- Softwood fences are the cheap early option — see Softwood Trunks for volume gathering.
- One species per pen where the build requires separate handling — and separate pens make feeding simpler regardless.
Feeding animals
The question "how do I feed animals in Hytale" has a mechanical answer that depends on the current build — the feeding mechanic, what each species accepts, and what feeding achieves (health, growth, production) are all build-specific. Fauna also differs by zone — the Emerald Grove's (Zone 1) meadow animals aren't what roams frozen Borea's snowfields — so what you can pen depends on where you settled. What's stable:
- Feed comes from farming and gathering — crops you grow and plants you collect. Growing your own feed is the difference between a farm and a very expensive zoo.
- Feed production should scale with animal count. Every mouth added to the pen adds a standing cost.
- Verify the mechanic in your build — the interaction is via the animal or a trough depending on the current patch. Check in-game; this is exactly the kind of mechanic the update tracker flags when it changes.
Choosing which animals to keep
Not all penned animals earn their feed. The questions that decide:
- What does it produce, and how often? The animals worth penning first are the ones whose output replaces a recurring trip — food above all.
- What does it eat, and can you grow that? An animal whose feed you can't produce near base is a chore with legs. Feed you grow yourself is the entire economics of farming.
- How contained does it stay? Fence height and pen behavior vary by species; one escape artist species can teach you to double-fence everything.
Start small — one species, one pen, feed production proven — then scale what worked. A farm of five species fed by guesswork collapses the first night something goes hostile.
Keeping them alive
- Light the pen area. Hostile mobs treat penned animals as a buffet.
- Pens inside your perimeter or walled separately — an open pen is an invitation.
- Don't overstock. Crowded pens are harder to feed, harder to defend, and no more productive.
The full food loop
Animals are the protein stage of a chain that starts with tools (beginner guide) and ends at cooked food: cooking stations are in the crafting guide. The whole loop — grow crops, feed animals, cook output, eat, repeat — is the closest thing Hytale has to a guaranteed food engine.
