Hytale release date
Short answer: Hytale is out now in Early Access. The long-running "when does Hytale release?" question ended when Early Access opened; the remaining question is when 1.0 arrives, and that date hasn't been locked.
The quick facts
| Early Access launch | January 13, 2026 (PC, via the official Hytale Launcher — not on Steam) |
| Developer | Hypixel Studios — independent again since November 2025 |
| Price | From $19.99 — see the price page |
| Full 1.0 release | Not dated — announced via official channels when it is |
| Consoles / mobile | Console planned after Early Access; no mobile during Early Access |
A long road, briefly
Hytale was announced in December 2018 by Hypixel Studios — a studio founded by the team behind the Hypixel Minecraft server. Riot Games acquired the studio in 2020. In June 2025, Riot cancelled Hytale and shut the studio down. What happened next is the part most "when does Hytale come out" answers miss:
The community's #savehytale movement convinced the original founders to return. In November 2025, co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme bought the game back from Riot, rehired more than 40 former and new team members (the team now numbers 50), and committed to funding the game personally "for many years." Critically, the revived build is the four-year-old legacy build, not the newer cross-platform engine — the team stepped away from the rewrite and revived the original version, merging more than 300 GitHub branches into a single working branch in about eight weeks.
Early Access opened January 13, 2026, with over 2.8 million players on day one. The studio has been explicit about what that means: this is "true" Early Access — unpolished, incomplete, and patched at a rapid pace (see the update tracker).
What "Early Access" means for you
- The game is playable and will keep changing. Mechanics balance, content and tooling all shift between patches — the update tracker follows what each change means.
- Expect rough edges. Bugs exist and get fixed in waves. If you hit an error, the fixes section probably has a page for it.
- Your feedback is part of the process — official channels collect it, and the patch cadence reflects it.
- Servers and mods are live but young. Both are core to the game's design; both mature patch by patch. Start with the server guide or the mods overview.
When is 1.0, then?
Not announced. What's verifiable: the game is in active Early Access development, 1.0 has no public date, and any site quoting one is guessing. When a date is announced it will come from official Hytale channels first — treat everything else as rumor. What's worth watching instead is what Early Access actually delivers per patch, which the updates page tracks.
The timeline so far
| When | What |
|---|---|
| December 2018 | Hytale announced by Hypixel Studios, the studio founded by the team behind the Hypixel Minecraft server |
| April 2020 | Riot Games acquires Hypixel Studios |
| 2020–2025 | Years of development blogging — zone reveals, creature spotlights, tech deep-dives — plus a cross-platform engine rewrite |
| June 2025 | Riot cancels Hytale and shuts down Hypixel Studios; the #savehytale community movement begins |
| November 2025 | Co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme repurchases the game; team rebuilt to 50; pre-orders open December 13 |
| January 13, 2026 | Early Access launches on PC — over 2.8 million players day one |
| Now | Five stable updates in (see the update tracker); 1.0 has no public date |
The cancellation-and-resurrection in 2025 is why older "when does Hytale come out?" answers on the internet are not just stale but backwards — for half of 2025, the correct answer was "never," and then it wasn't.
Where to follow development
Official Hytale channels — the game's site and its official social accounts — are the only reliable sources for patch notes and announcements. Community channels re-post with commentary, sometimes faster, sometimes wrong; treat them as pointers back to the official text, not replacements for it. When a date or decision matters to you, verify it survived the reposting.
Buy now or wait?
The honest framing, since the release-date question behind it is settled:
- Buy now if you want to play the game that exists today — servers, modding, the current zones and systems — and you accept mechanics changing under you. The mod ecosystem and server scene are live, which is most of what "playing Hytale" means for many people.
- Wait if you play games once, on hard mode, forever — a first playthrough saved for a more finished game is a defensible taste. You're trading the Early Access period for stability, at the cost of not knowing when the trade resolves.
- Either way, ignore the middle option — buying it now to watch it sit in your library while you wait for 1.0 is paying today for the version you didn't want to buy.
