Is Hytale on Steam?

Check the current answer before buying anywhere — and if the game runs through its own launcher, there's a two-minute way to get most of the Steam conveniences anyway.

Why the launcher question exists at all

Games distribute through Steam, their own launchers, or both — and Early Access games switch paths as they grow. What changes with each path, in practical terms:

  • Updates. Steam updates games itself; a standalone launcher also updates itself, through its own channel. Both work — they just answer to different schedules.
  • Where your library lives. A game outside Steam is invisible to friends, sale notifications and your playtime stats; the shortcut trick below recovers most of that.
  • Mods. Steam's Workshop, where a game uses it, is one mod channel among others — Hytale's own mod browser is the game-native one and works regardless of where you bought the game.

The short answer

No — Hytale is not on Steam, and that is a deliberate choice. The game is sold only through the official Hytale store (store.hytale.com) and runs through the official Hytale Launcher. When Early Access launched on January 13, 2026, the studio explained the decision in its own FAQ: they wanted to iterate with the existing community rather than absorb a wave of cold first impressions from players who hadn't followed the project, and — more concretely — Steam doesn't currently support some of Hytale's modding features, and modding is core to the game.

  • Is it coming to Steam later? Officially "not initially." The team has said they'll evaluate options as the game matures — it is not a never, but there is no Steam page to watch today.
  • Consoles? Planned for after Early Access; no dates. Mobile: not during Early Access.
  • What that means for you: buy at store.hytale.com, install the Hytale Launcher, and use the two-minute shortcut trick below to get most of the Steam conveniences anyway.

One more reason it isn't on Steam: review pressure

The studio was explicit that skipping Steam at launch was partly about avoiding "overindexing on negative reviews from players that aren't as well-informed yet about what we are doing." Early Access Hytale is rough by design — it revived a four-year-old build in about eight weeks — and a rough launch on Steam gets review-bombed into visibility. Selling direct lets them reach the audience that opted in knowingly.

Adding the Hytale launcher to Steam

If you play through the standalone launcher, Steam can still host it:

  1. In Steam: Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  2. Browse to the Hytale launcher executable and add it.
  3. Launch from Steam from now on — you get the overlay, screenshots and playtime tracking on that entry.

Two limitations worth knowing: Steam features attach to the shortcut, not the game's identity (no achievements or workshop through a shortcut), and Steam Input — the useful part for controller users — needs enabling per game, which leads to the next point.

The Steam Input angle

Even where native controller support is thin, Steam Input can translate controller input into keyboard and mouse actions for any game launched through Steam, including non-Steam shortcuts. Setup details, and how that compares to native controller support, are on the controller support page.

What you keep and lose with a non-Steam shortcut

FeatureNative Steam gameNon-Steam shortcut
Overlay, screenshots, playtime trackingYesYes
Steam Input controller layerYesYes — enable it per shortcut
AchievementsYes, if the game ships themNo — they attach to Steam's game identity, which a shortcut doesn't have
Automatic updatesSteam handles themThe game's own launcher handles them
Workshop mod browsingYes, if the game uses WorkshopNo — use the in-game mod browser
Friends see what you're playingYesShows as the shortcut name

The rows people care about most — controller support and the overlay — are exactly the ones a shortcut preserves. What a shortcut can't fake is identity-linked features, which is why achievements are the honest dividing line.
