Hytale "Error applying update"

The launcher shows one of three messages — "error applying updates to game", "error downloading patch", or "error downloading file" — and the update won't finish. In most cases this is not your computer's fault: the download servers are overloaded, and what works is a fresh launcher and repeated retries.

First: understand what's actually failing

This error happens on the launcher side — the patch itself won't download or apply to your game files. If the game did update but your server is now behind, that's a different problem with its own page: how to update a Hytale server.

When these errors appear right after a patch goes live (or during a launch window), the cause is usually capacity: the launcher itself reports an internal error and says the download servers are overloaded. Nothing on your machine is broken — the download cannot finish until an attempt gets through.

The fix, in order

  1. Re-download the launcher. Go to the Hytale site's download section and get the Windows download again. Delete or replace your existing launcher first. This is the only part of the problem that can be on your side: a damaged or outdated launcher can fail the same way an overloaded server does, and a fresh copy removes that possibility.
  2. Retry, and expect to retry. If the error comes back immediately, that's normal during overload windows — start the download again. Nothing is wrong with your setup; the download just needs an attempt that gets through.
  3. Verify the build number. Once the download lands, check the version the launcher reports (it's shown in the launcher window). Match it against the current build on the update tracker — if they agree, you're done.

Why waiting is the right answer here

With most game errors, something on your PC is set up wrong, and troubleshooting is how you find it. This error is different: it happens on Hytale's download servers, which are overloaded whenever an update goes live. During launch week and the hours after each stable update, downloads fail for everyone at the same time, and then start working again as the load decreases. Retry, wait, and don't reinstall anything.

If the launcher is fine but the game misbehaves after updating

  • Can't join a server anymore — the classic version mismatch: your client updated, the server didn't. Owner-side fix: update the server.
  • Connection refused with a firewall message — that's traffic being blocked in transit, not a patch problem: firewall error page.
  • Friends can't join each other at all — the group-level version and NAT checklist: multiplayer not working.
