Silver Ore
Silver is a mid-game metal: better gear than copper and iron, found deep enough that you shouldn't go looking for it with starter tools. Here's where it spawns, what you need to mine it, and what it's worth crafting.
Where Silver Ore spawns
Silver Ore generates underground, in and around cave systems and mine shafts beneath the Emerald Grove — Zone 1 of Orbis, and the zone Early Access centers on. The reliable pattern:
- Natural caves that cut deep below the surface. Cave walls expose ore veins you can spot from a distance by their color.
- Abandoned mineshafts. Pre-dug tunnels reach depths that would take a long time to dig yourself, and they often cut through ore-bearing rock.
- Deeper layers. The further below the surface, the better the odds of finding silver rather than the starter metals.
What you need before you go
| Requirement | Why |
|---|---|
| Mid-tier pickaxe or better | Starter pickaxes mine too slowly and take excessive durability damage on silver-bearing rock. Stone→copper first, then silver becomes reasonable. |
| Torches | Caves are pitch black; torches also mark your exit route. |
| Weapon | Caves and mineshafts are where hostile mobs concentrate. |
| Food | A mining trip plus a fight plus a climb out eats through hunger. |
The full tool-progression reasoning lives in the mining guide.
A safe silver run
- Find a cave entrance or mineshaft on the surface near your base — descending far from home means hauling ore back a long way. Kweebec villages and Trork camps are the landmarks worth scouting first: one marks safe ground, the other marks ground to route around.
- Place torches as you descend, on one side of the tunnel only. When every torch is on your left walking in, they're on your right walking out.
- Scan cave walls for ore veins as you go down; silver-bearing rock is visually distinct from plain stone.
- Mine the vein, then check the rock behind it — veins often continue into the wall for several blocks.
- Head back up before your light and food run low — that is the moment to stop mining, not after.
What silver is used for
Silver Ore smelts into silver ingots, which craft into weapons, armor and tools a tier above copper and iron equipment. It's also an ingredient in several crafting chains you'll hit in the mid game — the crafting guide maps the full metal progression.
If you're mining silver specifically for equipment, mine more than you think you need: a full equipment set costs considerably more ingots than a single tool, and a second cave trip is worse than a longer first one.
From ore to ingot
Raw ore isn't equipment yet — the chain is mine → smelt → craft, and each stage has a bottleneck:
- Smelt at a furnace. Ore plus fuel becomes ingots. Fuel is the practical constraint — coal from mining, or softwood as a fallback.
- Craft at the right station. Silver equipment crafts at the station tier the crafting guide maps out — if the recipe doesn't appear, you're at the wrong station, not missing the ore.
- Location. Smelt near the mine or near the base — not halfway between. Every trip carrying ore is a trip you're not mining.
Silver vs. the metals around it
| Metal | Found at | Equipment tier | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | Shallow caves, early depths | First real upgrade from stone | Yes — the gate to everything below |
| Iron | Mid-depth caves and shafts | Workhorse tier; long useful life | Yes — the longest-lived equipment you'll use |
| Silver | Deep caves, mineshafts | Above iron; magic-adjacent gear in some chains | When iron gear is done and you're pushing the mid game |
The order that wastes the least time: full copper tool set → iron weapons and pickaxe → silver when the iron set has already paid for the trips. Jumping straight to silver with starter gear works exactly as well as it sounds like it would.
If you keep not finding it
- You're not deep enough. The single most common cause — near-surface caves mostly expose the starter metals.
- Wrong caves. Shallow surface caves vs. systems that cut deep below the surface are different economies. Follow the ones that keep going down.
- Your world's seed is unkind. Distribution is randomized — a different cave system, or a mineshaft elsewhere in the zone, is the fix. Patterns are stable; specific veins aren't.
